So darkwolfie called me at work today (he NEVER calls me at work, and technically, I had just gotten out of the shower after PT) to tell me that the water heater was busted. Last time this happened, at least it was summertime. He says he has a plumber on the way from this franchise operation called Mr Plumber, and he'll call me back to tell me the verdict.

Verdict is, we need a new water heater. Thank god this is now and not then, because we were poor as churchmice then, and went most of the summer without a water heater. We can't do that now. darkwolfie had to work tonight, so I took over the "find a plumber" effort. (The guy from Mr Plumber actually told us to find someone else, as their flat rate to replace a water heater is over a grand.)

darkwolfie told me about this website called Servicemagic.com. You choose the task you need done, plug in info about the task and your contact info, and up to three pros will contact you to give you a quote. It worked
amazingly
well. I got three quotes, ranging in price from over $800 to just over $600. Interestingly, the first guy that called was the most expensive, and the last guy was the cheapest.
And
they can do it on Friday morning, which is darkwolfie's day off.

I think the best thing about finding Servicemagic is that there are a lot of things we need to get done around the house that we can't do ourselves, like replace the garage doors and trade out the stove (my mom said I could have her old one), and I was feeling a bit intimidated about finding people to do it. This way, I don't have to do the legwork of finding people to call, which is huge. If I lived in Worcester County, I could probably find people -- my folks have contacts -- but they won't come all the way out here. I'm excited to get this stuff done now!

Tomorrow, I have jury duty (still need to organize the knitting bag), and then tomorrow night I need to tidy up the laundry area downstairs so the guy can get down there.

Whoops, that posted before I meant to. We love our nice handyman, Doug, who was referred to us when we first moved to Methuen and didn't know who to call. He is licensed and bonded, and has taken care of (or arranged) all kinds of projects for us (interior painting, plumbing, electrical, building new basement stairs, chimney/roof masonry stuff). He makes suggestions for less expensive solutions, shows up on time, keeps us posted on status, cleans up after himself--just awesome! In fact, he will be at our house later today. He is also affiliated with a larger business that tackles bigger projects.

nothing really to do with the post, per se, except to say that dead water heaters suck. BTDT.

I <3 that icon.
