spring, when the great migrations begin
We had a lovely day today. darkwolfie came home and took a nice nap, then we headed out to get copies of our birth certificates. I was born in Groton and darkwolfie was born in Fitchburg, so at least we could go and pick them up in person. That's nice, because the mail service lately has been so spotty... "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night" my ass. Then again, there is no apocalypse clause.

Anyway. We were able to get through the defenses at the Groton Town Hall by climbing a ladder to the second floor and then walking down to the first. Apparently they don't climb. Acrophobia? Poor gross motor skills? Who knows, but $10 dollars and three cans of beans later, we were on our way to Fitchburg.

We went up Rte 119 to 13 and across that way. Lovely ride with some nice curves. The abandoned cars were no problem; luckily they were mostly on the shoulder, instead of crashed and burning like they were on 495. Getting into Fitchburg City Hall was a little trickier; they had quite the serpentine set up, requiring some real low speed cornering maneuvers, and a blood test at the end to verify that we weren't infected. The City Clerk pretended that she couldn't find darkwolfie's record for a few minutes, but a can of tunafish slid across the counter solved that little problem handily.

A couple slices of pizza at Espresso Pizza later (I think I'll get a sub if Fitchburg is still standing the next time we're out that way; I don't care for their pizza sauce. It's too sweet), and we were on our way home. While we were sitting there eating, we saw three blacked-out SUVs speeding up the street away from the biotech facility. They didn't even stop for the lights. Wonder what that was all about?

We decided to retrace our steps, since we pretty much knew the terrain, but the highway was more clogged than we remembered. Guess we weren't the only ones that thought of getting to higher, cooler ground. So we hopped off the highway and took surface roads. I guess the heat wave earlier this week increased the decay rate, because they were moving slower than usual, and some were missing body parts. It's so much easier to dodge them when they're trying to chase you on stumps.

So now we're back at home sweet barricade. darkwolfie added another strand of concertina, and it's my job to hose the decayed flesh off the barbs every morning. It's our anniversary coming up, and I'm hoping to unwrap the Little Gem Ultra-Lightweight Flamethrower. It runs very efficiently, on those little cylinders of fuel you can get at camping stores -- I know where there's a cache. Plus, the tank is black with pink flames! How can you not love that?

So as soon as we get the passports, we're making a run for the border. Hopefully the ferry will still be running, otherwise it's going to be a long damn ride. The cooler weather will slow them down, though... we hope...

This? Most awesome LJ post I've read in a while. Had to re-read it 3 times to figure out it was well-done fiction.

Is this part of a longer work you have in mind, or a stand alone? It would make a GREAT intro... and it isn't like you are a wage slave atm, eh? ;)

It's a stand alone, for Blog Like It's The End Of The World Day, which was yesterday. Far fewer folks on my f-list participated this year, though.

Didn't even know about it, but it sounds cool!
