I just called the vet. Max is FIV positive. I'm told that I can have him in the house with Mathilde safely, but will Wolfie want to risk it? I don't know.

This sucks so bad.

I just want to cry.

FIH as in the feline equivalent of HIV? Damn, everybody is getting hit with bad luck all of a sudden and going through some pretty tough times.

I'm sorry to hear this, Tasha. If you were to keep Max in the house, what are the risks and what's his prognosis?

(*hug*)

Yeah, it pretty much is. His immune system is depressed and he might get sick more often than the average HIV negative cat.

On the upside, he can only transmit it to other cats, so Wolfie and I are safe, and then pretty much only only through bites, so if he plays nicely with Mathilde, everything should be fine. One of the vet techs has had an FIV positive and an FIV negative cat living together for some time now with no issues.

I'm going to post our decision here shortly.

Oh no! Poor Max. Poor you. I hope you can find a workable solution. He seems such a sweet kitty.

I am so sorry to hear that

You *can* have them in the house together, but it's hard to be sure.

Here is some info on FIV... http://www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/fiv.html
