over the river...
So our friend Points is in town for a few days, visiting his mom. He's a cool guy; I'm working with him this year on producing the Anthrocon conbook. We like him. He's fun.

The original plan called for us to pick him up in Brookline and then we'd go out to Fitchburg to a karaoke show at a bar that's run by an old friend of Wolfie's. It's called Sazerac, and it's off of Electric Ave in Fitchburg, MA. It's really nice; go check it out. Tell 'em Wolfie sent you. Dunno if it'll help, but it's a hell of an icebreaker. So we left a little late, but we had directions, right? What's the worst that can happen?

Well, the worst didn't happen, but it was a pain in the ass trip. I went through Harvard Square somewhere between three and five times looking for Beacon Street. Somehow we ended up in Allston instead of Brookline (and if you look at a map, you'll see that Allston is the opposite direction from Brookline). We got a map, which helped, and we finally found where we needed to be and got to Points' mom's house, where we picked him up and hared off to Pizzaria Uno's for dinner, right in Kenmore Square.

We parked some little jaunt away from the restaurant and walked up the street for a couple of blocks, because that's where we found a parking spot and we weren't confident that we'd be able to find one closer. During the walk, we were discussing the directions and the difficulty we had following them. As we drew closer to Kenmore Square, we could see the famous Citgo sign... the one that you see on TV when they broadcast Red Sox home games. Wolfie said that he could see it from the other side of the river (the Charles) when we were driving around looking for Beacon Street. Points gave us this weird look. "You should have seen it when you came through," he said.

Then the penny dropped. "Well gee," Wolfie said. "Had I known we were supposed to be looking for the Citgo sign, we could have come right through Kenmore Square!"

Beacon Street doesn't go through Harvard Square, you see. It goes through Kenmore. We were in the totally wrong part of the city. In fact, we were in the wrong city. Harvard Square is in Cambridge, and we ended up in Allston, headed for Arlington, before we turned around. Then we found ourselves in Brighton. If I ever need to go find the offices of our local PBS station, I know just where to go. We finally found Beacon Street, and from there it was a doddle -- everything was marked on the map. Note that I didn't say it was marked on the ground; Brookline is nearly as bad as Boston about street signage. We did have to turn around once, but after that, it was a piece of cake.

All I have to say after this is that Jillian's was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to going back sometime.

If it's any consolation...

Whenever postrodent and I go on a roadtrip, we rent a car from the Avis at the Charles Hotel... and we get lost every freaking time we try to get out of Harvard Square. :)
