I actually made some sewing progress today. I finished the shoulder seam on Wolfie's tunic (as in, it is sewn and both sides of the seam turned under and whipstitched down), and started sewing on one side panel. I decided to try stitching it on using a running stitch instead of my usual backstitch. It's slightly faster, but I don't know if it's as strong. I'm tempted to rip it and sew just that seam (and it's mate on the other side) on the machine, but I'm torn. On the one hand, it'd be faster, but on the other hand, I like the idea of my beloved going to the altar in a garment I made for him and in which I sewed every stitch myself. I think I'll stick with my method, and in the meantime, make everything else, and if I get panicky on his, then I'll bend my standards a bit.

My dress is all assembled, and I took a few minutes today to rip out the tops of the gores where the seam allowances were sewn down and stitch them back in by hand so I could turn the seam allowances under and stitch them down. That will also be done by machine, I think, at least on this incarnation. I actually have enough fabric left to make another dress -- I'd make a tunic for Wolfie if he didn't look so awful in red. I do have five yards of dark navy fabric, which is enough for a dress for me and a tunic for him, so maybe I'll make coordinating court garb for us for Pennsic. I'll have a little time to do some more leisurely sewing after the wedding (i.e. look for me behind Wolfie's dealer's table, handsewing something or other). And can I just say, the thought that five yards of fabric is plenty to make clothes for both him and me is just intoxicating.

I do need to do a wee bit more fabric shopping -- I need some white linen for undergowns. I just can't cut the crinkle cotton right now. I'm thinking I'll head up to Manchester and hit Martin's House of Cloth and Fabric Fix. I've been to Martin's before, and the selection is vast, but pricey. I've heard good things about Fabric Fix, but I've never been there, so that'll be an adventure.

I also spoke to me household brother Duncan Forbes today. He keeps bees, and last year he and his lady wife (my apprentice sister) gave us the yummiest honey from their hive. Unfortunately, the hive did not survive the bitter cold snap this winter, so he's getting new bees and will hopefully have honey in time for Pennsic (further yum). He also has what I currently want, which is a lump of real straight-from-the-bee-glands-to-you beeswax, for conditioning my thread before handsewing. I'll have to call Eibhlin (his wife) on Monday and ask her to grab a bit for me before she comes out to sew with the Duchess this week. (I think beekeeping would be nifty, if I didn't live in the barrio where there are no flowers for them to eat. The honey would probably be nasty and taste of exhaust.)

Talking about sewing is making me feel better, perhaps because it gives me a focus for my mind and hands. I'll have to encourage Wolfie to draw tomorrow. I'd forgotten how much I like handsewing, too. I mean, I like(d) embroidery, but lately I get such satisfaction out of tidy seams and finished edges. I think I'm going to enter his wedding tunic into A&S competition once it's done -- I need to make a point of getting to Northern Lights again. And definitely, more things will get handsewn.

Edit: I also forgot to mention that I need some nice wool for a new coat for SCA wear. I'm hoping for a melton, but time will tell. No melton, though, and I'll end up having to quilt something again. Think I'll find affordable wool melton in May outside of a certain shop in Keene? Stay tuned to find out!

Oh, hey, I invited anneball to join cabal_knit. She loves the snark and dislikes the stupidity, and so will fit in nicely.
