laces - when you don't know what to do... — LiveJournal
do the next thing
I made two laces tonight, and I'm not entirely sure either one of them is long enough to use as a shoulder strap for my dress; it'll depend on the size of the brooches. I'm also not nutty about the differing tensions from beginning to end. It would seem that I was not sufficiently diligent about "beating down the shed" of the braid at the outset, but it's hard to see when you're so far away from the knot and the braid is so fine!

I used some silk that I bought from a group purchase; even using two loops per bowe, the laces ended up very narrow indeed. I might have to try again, using pearl cotton, but the silk is so lovely and shiny that I really don't want to. Maybe I'll get some half-cones of the heavier stuff from Halcyon... but it's not as shiny. Sigh.

Anyway, I'm sure you want to see my masterpieces...

Broad Lace of V BowesEndented Lace of V Bowes

The one on the left is the first one: a Broad Lace of V (five) Bowes. I'm not nutty about it, but it might be useable. The one on the right I like much better. It's an Endented Lace of V Bowes. Neither is difficult, though I must remember to ask the Guild how they take laces reversed: over the top or from underneath. I think I do it backwards (ie from underneath), and it seems to work much better, but I don't know if it makes a significant difference in the braid structure. Doesn't seem to.

The kicker is that I had to work from translations that I did of a period lacemaking guide that was published in this Chaucer Journal thing; a friend of mine gave me a photocopy of it. I can't find my Compleat Anachronist on fingerloop braiding! I'm terribly distraught and will reorder this very night, but at least in the meantime I have the photocopy and the translations to work from. I hope I can figure out this tension and length issue; I really wanted to have something nicer than fabric tubes for straps.
