Irked, I say.

I've been waiting two weeks for my marriage certificate to come in the mail, and I just called the Town Clerk's office in Salem.  Apparently I was supposed to enclosed a SASE and $12 to get a copy of my certificate.  I could understand that for copies, but shouldn't we get a courtesy copy as newlyweds?  I'm actually hurt by all this.  I've been eagerly awaiting the day when I would get the mail and open the envelope containing our marriage certificate, and then go change my name, and here I was supposed to enclose a SASE and $12?  There was nothing about it on the paperwork.  If I enclosed six boxtops, would I get a seekrit decoder ring, too?

They coulda told us that when we got the bloody license, though. Bastards. Totally took the shine off the penny. I stepped out of Salem Town Hall and just bawled.

I know! And if you ask them about it, they just look at you blankly and say ". . . why?"

Bizarre - you get given a copy in the UK during the ceremony, whether you opt for a church or registry office do.

Oh, I have to add, we have to pay through the nose to get the actual paperwork done, but at least they include the certificate in the ceremony - which, when you think about it, is kind of the point.

Here, you file for a license (sort of like posting banns, I guess), then get married, and the officiant signs the license, saying he did the ceremony, and then you mail that back to the city to be filed and a certificate generated. Except it was buried in fine print that you have to pay to get a copy back. The certificate was filed on June 30! I could have had my name changed for almost two weeks now!
