maybe I will dye my own thread - when you don't know what to do...
do the next thing
maybe I will dye my own thread
I was perusing the handspinning e-zine, and read the article on dyeing.  At the bottom of the article (just a very general overview of the different dyes available to the handspinner) was a list of resources.  Among them was Maiwa Handprints, which is a site I've never heard of.  I guess they're in Canada.  The reasson I'm so excited is that they have a natural dyes kit available, with enough dyestuff and mordants to dye 1.5 to 4 kg of fiber (I'm hoping that's per dyestuff), for $39.95.  The problem is, they don't say if it's Canadian or US dollars.  Either way, I think it's a good investment, but I'd like to know ahead of time.

It comes with logwood, cochineal, osage orange, and madder for dyestuffs, and alum, cream of tartar, and tannin for mordants.  The colors yielded will lean towards the red side, I think.  They also sell indigo, which I think would be interesting to play with (instructional link), and cutch and marigold.  Cochineal intrigues me because it's basically ground up bugs.  I'm pratically phobic about bugs, but I might get some sick satisfaction about grinding them up in a mortar and pestle (I'd have to get one of my own; Wolfie uses his for grinding cooking herbs).  Or I could use a coffee grinder...  Look at em, though... they look like little bits of gravel, or the white stuff in potting soil that's in there to provide moisture or air or whatever.

I'm too ambitious for my own good.

You know that cochineal is used for coloring in a lot of juice drinks? Particularly pink grapefruit and cranberry. I read the ingredients once and said "EW THEY COLOR IT WITH BUGS."

But it's ALL NATURAL, so it couldn't possibly hurt you. Here, try this juice. It's flavored with foxglove.
