design choices -- a poll
I'm looking for opinions about which design to use for my knitted cushion.  The designs are supposed to be inspired by the grave cushions detailed in A History of Handknitting, by Richard Rutt, and "Use Period designs or original designs based on a Period style."  I looked through my copy of Here Be Wyverns, by Nancy Spies, and there are a great many diagonal diapering patterns based on tiled floors and walls and sometimes manuscript backgrounds.

With that in mind, I took the hallmark I designed over the weekend (more about that in another post) and stared messing about with it.  The results are here:  Design 1 and Design 2.  (Sorry; I saved an Excel sheet as a web page just to get it done.  The code is horrendous, but it was the quickest way to get the image on screen.  Mea culpa.)

I think that Design 1 is more visually interesting, but that Design 2 is more likely to work up properly.  I intend to knit this in the round, on double points, because flat knitting did not develop as an overall technique until after period (period being defined as pre-1600) -- there are no extant pieces with seaming, and all the illustrations of knitting show it being done in the round.  I'm not looking forward to floats between needles, but I'll get over it.

So, folks:

I think Design #2 will be visually quite interesting, and also very pretty! #1 seems a little busy to me...

Heh... #1 just has the pale grey row moved over half a repeat.

I see what you're saying, though.
