She works at the National Museum of Roller Skating.  It's a fucking shrine to the wheel.  And THOSE are the best looking skates she can come up with?

I know nothing about roller skates, but is it normal to have a velcro strap? That seems weeny...

It is if they're cheezy-ass sneaker skates from KMart. I'll see if I can't find some pictures of *real* roller skates.

some of the modern skates i've seen (decent ones), look just like that. shrug. maybe she likes the nice red wheels?

those old ones, with the key, and the clay wheels are so Flintstones ;)

Those are NOT decent skates. Those suck beyond belief, and are only good for going round and round in circles at session for a couple of uses, before you get flat spots on the wheels and the open bearings get packed with grit.

These are decent skates.

i think the word you're looking for is "pro sumer" :>

decent skates are for riding outdoors and not worrying if you kill them. YOUR decent skates should only be used on good surfaces (indoors), and never see a puddle :>

i'd guess the difference in cost between the two could buy me a loom ;)

No, crapass skates are for skating outdoors. Decent skates are for proper use, which is indoors.

And you're pretty close to right about the price difference.

snicker.

it's that word "decent"... decent MEANS craptacular to the likes of me :>

Main Entry: de·cent
Pronunciation: 'dE-s&nt
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle French or Latin; Middle French, from Latin decent-, decens, present participle of decEre to be fitting; akin to Latin decus honor, dignus worthy, Greek dokein to seem, seem good
4 : fairly good but not excellent : ADEQUATE, SATISFACTORY

actually, i'd be surprised that even kmart skates wouldn't have what amounts to good bearings - even the crappiest inline skates had better bearings than my old bicycle had (packed machine bearing vs loose type). i've rescued destroyed skates just to get the bearing units in fact :>

There are "adequate for most people's use" bearings, and there are good bearings. Good bearings stand up to the kind of abuse I put theem through as a kid -- 2-6 hours a day, 6 days a week, 50 weeks a year, with all the attendant crap that went with it (temp changes, impacts, direction changes, and so forth).

It really boils down to, do you expect your skates to carry you round and round in circles, and maybe up and down the paved bike paths, or do you expect them to help you really make the most of your skating abilities. You expect the former; I expect the latter.

And my bitch really was that the woman knows better. Those are just ugly assskates, and don't do anything to enhance the picture of the ugly-ass skirt.

Plus I'm jealous of her job.

This is what I'm talking about:

Fully adjustable trucks so you can catch and keep an edge, adjustable toe stop so you can have it as close to or as far away from the floor as you like, reinforced plate so you don't snap it landing a jump, heavy duty leather boots that support without losing mobility... those are roller skates.

those are SUVs of roller skates :>
