I went to artistic session at the rink today. I think was the youngest skater there, save the girl who's home on spring break from college. And I'm 37.

I tried to skate in my old boots, but my toesies were so squished in them that I just couldn't manage. So I took them off and tried to wipe the dirt and gook off my bearings, and I discovered something very sad -- my beloved, very expensive Fafnir bearings are rusted. So now, not only do I need new boots, but I need cushions, wheels, and bearings. And yet, I've still spent about $200 less for all that than I intended to spend just on boots. Of course, I didn't buy the really top-of-the-line wheels and bearings; that would have been about $200 by themselves. I figure I'll get my balance back and get the boots broken in and see where I want to go before I get the really high-end equipment.

Artistic session was so relaxing, though. I found I could remember a few of the dances (remember and do are two very different things), which is comforting. I just can't wait till I have skates that work the way they're supposed to, that don't hurt my feet. I felt so stiff today, and I know I was way too far up on my knees, but my skates hurt enough that I couldn't settle in and get my posture right. Hopefully that'll help my front crossovers, because they were awful. Of course, my thighs are a lot heavier than they used to be, so they felt all wrong anyway. With a little luck and a lot of work, I'll make them feel right again.

The rink owner is the only one there at the moment who does skate builds, so hopefully, I'll get my skates this week coming up, and I can get this party started.

My knees were too straight. My coach used to say "You're too high up on your knee" or "Deepen your knee." Can't skate with stiff legs!

Sounds fun! It's great that you remember everything- that will really be beneficial once muscle memory kicks in and you can again DO everything :)
