max kitty
Just occurred to me that I hadn't posted an update about Max in some months.

He seems to be a slow healer.  We knocked out the infection, but he still had sores on his belly, shoulder, and in his armpit, so we left the collar on most of the time.  Now and again, we'd take the collar off, he'd clean off the scabs that weren't attached to skin, but were stuck in his fur, we'd spritz him with germicidal spray for cats, and put the collar back on again.  I think he's been wearing the thing since, what, March?  April?

So right before Glenn Linn, we took off the collar, let him do his thing, have a bit of a wash, and took a look at his belly.  I can't believe this is the same belly that looked like hamburger such a short time ago.  There are still some very small open spots, but for the most part he's healed.  Still no fur in places, but that will grow in.  I'm so, so happy.  Max is the sweetest kitty I've ever had in my life (though I've only had three, really).  If it weren't for his cleanliness fetish* about the litter box, he'd be perfect.  I loves him muchly, I does, and I'm just glad I had the money to look after him when he needed it. He deserves the best... when we get the parlor squared away, I think there will have to be a kitty condo put in there.  Mathilde can play too, of course, but I think Max will really get a kick out of it.

Right now he has taken to snoozing on top of the crew box darkwolfie has in the kitchen with all the bulky art supplies from Anthrocon.  It is very cute.

Hedningarna!

Finally, someone else who listens to strange Nordic folk-rock!

My favorite's still Garmarna, because everyone dies.

And I came to it in the strangest way.

I'm a slash fic fan. There is a really wonderful, very long slash story by an author who calls himself Mice, on the Wraithbait archive (Stargate: Atlantis), called "Moments Sacred and Profane." It's McKay/Beckett, and there is an original character named Erin Siwicki who, among other, more mundanely useful skills, is an ethnomusicologist. (I swear, there is a poit to this.)

Someone, who I can't remember, did a fan mix as if she was Siwicki leaving a mix CD for McKay as a sample of what world music has to offer. Here's what's in the mix:

Drafur & Gildur by Hedningarna (Scandinavia)
Ukhalangami (You Cry for Me) by Ladysmith Black Mombazo (South Africa)
A Stór, A Stór, A Ghrá by Deirbhile Ní Bhrolcháin (Irish)
Kagami by Seattle Kokon Taiko (Japanese)
Kotahitanga (Union) by Oceania (Maori)
Vurba (Willow Tree) by The Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir (Bulgaria)
Salva Nos by Mediaeval Baebes (Medieval Latin)
La prima vez by La Rondinella (Sephardic)
Raghupati by Jai Uttal (Indian)
Ritual Song by Sainkho (Tuvan) (no throatsinging; I was disappointed)
Spirit Nation by Spirit Nation (Lakota)
Alasdair Mhic Cholla Ghasda by Capercaille (Scottish)
Bieggarajorri (Weathervane) by Wimme (Finnish)
Born In The Delta by Doc Terry (Delta Blues)
BONUS TRACKS
God Thinks by Voltaire
Lobachevsky by Tom Lehrer

It's a fabulous mix -- I don't think there's a song on it that I actually dislike, but I'm really digging the Hedningarna and Wimme cuts. I can zip it and send it to you if you want.

And I may download some Garmarna; the samples I listened to sounded cool. (I kind of like Sigur Ros, too.)

Dude! Bring it! my name at comcast dot net

Garmarna is a lot darker and snarlier in texture and tone than Hedningarna (except for their werewolf "Varg Timmen" song on 'Tra'; the title actually means hour of the wolf); there's a third Norse/Swedish folk-rock band called Gjallahorn that is all sweetness and light compared to the other two, despite their growling didgeridoo. And yes, it works...

Hedningarna = The Heathen Folk
Gjallarhorn = Baldur's horn, which is blown by the god to signal Ragnarok
Garmarna = the name of the wolf at the gates of Hel

My favorite tracks for Garmarna are "Vanner och Frender" (Friends and Kin) from "God's Musicians," "Herr Holkin" from "Vengeance" and for pure headbanging savagery best at earbleed volume (DON'T play this in the car!) "Antioch" and especially "Kleveberg's Fire" from Vittrad.

heh... All my electronics have Norse names: the laptop is Fensalir, the 60gb iPod is Saga, the black nano is Svartalf, the printer is Skald, and the wireless network is Yggdrassil.

I'm uploading it to my website now; I'll shoot you an email when it's up. That way it won't take forever to download.
