Anyone know anything about Dupont, WA?  My bestest Army buddy is transferring to Ft Lewis and is thinking that'd be a good place to live, as it's close.

i feel: curious curious

My instinct (from four years at uni in Tacoma) is to say it's not that exciting of a place, but I've not been there. I'll ask some locals and see what they have to say.

I was wondering more about reasonably-priced, safe places to live. I should have been more specific.

I was trying to find a nice way to say "I'm not sure I'd live there", but I do think it is reasonably-priced and fairly safe as well. Again, though, I'm just basing this on the things college kids say about their hometowns, so I'll ask people who might have concrete information for more input ;)

But would you not live there because it's boring, or because it's expensive, or because it's unsafe? Because the guy in question is by no means a social animal; he is his job, and lack of a night life is not a deterrent. Drive-by shootings, OTOH, would be. :-)

Yes, because it's boring ;) I asked my boyfriend who's from the general area and he says "it's in the middle of --------- nowhere", but he has never heard of it being particularly unsafe. His impression is that comparing south Tacoma to Dupont, you'd get more land, bigger house, safer area in Dupont for the same price.

Oh, no... remember, Army guy, moves around a lot -- I should have mentioned he's single. He doesn't want a house, just an apt in a quiet safe complex. Boring is not necessarily a deterrent. :-) And proximity to Ft Lewis is a plus.

Hm.. we know nothing about the apartment situation in Dupont. Any reason he's not thinking Lakewood? I think it may actually be closer to Ft Lewis (although I'm not exactly sure where one ENTERS Ft Lewis, so it could be closer distance-wise but not travel-wise? Parts of Lakewood are really sketchy but there are nicer areas, too.

He says the traffic on I-5 is a mess...

Yes, that it is, although I wouldn't have thought it would be AS bad on that stretch. Again, I don't really know where one enters the base - I know we drove past it often, but it could be that entering from Lakewood is terrible. All in all Dupont (DuPont?) looks like a reasonably nice place - relatively suburban and safe.
