I love history.

I was trying to find a picture of the heraldic charge "a beaver in its sacrifice," but alas, I could not. But it's period and it is, I shit you not, a beaver biting off its own balls.

I look forward to seeing that sometime!

Up until now, the best I've found is this detail shot from "The Truimph of Venus" that has some 'inappropriate' touching.

And don't they look excited about it...

It's not a very detailed image, but look at the two guys in the back.

To reiterate, I love history.

And everyone thinks our forebears were such prudes.

I found grafitti from something like 1912 in the attic of one of the buildings ay my college that said "John Soandso fucked Alma Thusandsuch, May 4, 1912." (Names and dates have been changed to protect the guilty.) I mean, really...

Alas, that we know these things... but hurray for having someone to share it with.

I have a reference to a 13th Centry bestiary (with image of the self-sacrifice). Also Gerald of Wales is cited has having explained that in "Eastern Lands" : ...Beavers were much prozed for the medicinal properties of their testicles. By a marvellous innate understanding, eastern beavers were well aware of this, and when hard pressed by hounds, they would castrate themselves and throw the relevant organs at the hunters, thus literally saving their skins. If a beaver which had made this sacrifice was chased again, it simply ran to a high place and cocked up its hind leg, revealing that the sought after parts were already missing. (A Mirror of Medieval Wales: Gerald of Wales and his Journey of 1188 - published by CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments)

In any case, the reference to the bestiary, and it's image is there. Not Heraldic, per se, but perhaps a start.

I'm almost sure that it's in one of my Big Heraldry Books(tm), but I am in the midst of the death roll of Pennsic sewing and besides, my asshole ex seems to have scarpered with one of them, in all likelihood the one with the picture in question.

If you find an image online, please post it. I *love* to see a Heraldic version.

Poor little self-castrated beavers - ironic, really.

If I remember to look and I find it after Pennsic, I'll scan and post it. Too funny.

Istvan would know where it is, I think, or Kenrick.

how very... regal...
jdulac From: jdulac Date: August 3rd, 2006 11:37 am (UTC) (base camp)
It's a hunting scene. The lions are attacking the camels and preparing to do them in. I suppose you could call that "mounting" in the sense that wrestling someone to the ground to break their neck is mounting.

Still... camels? They're just so ungainly and not regal at all.
