It was a raging success, and I am converted. No more will I be a slave to the hoop. However, it's 3 hours later than I wanted to go to bed, and so here I go. Nighters.

Another daring hoop-free girl

I often work without a hoop because it is faster and also I think it makes the stiching look softer and more clearly antique/hand done. I have done a lot of quilting projects including some queen sized quilts without using a frame. I do use a hoop for counted cross stich or very detailed whitework but I haven't done much of that in years.

BTW--I am looking for the best way to transfer detailed patterns to fabric. What are you using?

Re: Another daring hoop-free girl

Well, for the cloak project, I drew the pattern on Sulky Tear-Easy embroidery stabilizer. It's designed for embroidery machines, but it works just as well for hand sewing. It does tend to wear the wool thread as I pull it through, so I use shorter lengths, but it should be all right for cotton or silk.
