oh, i *wish* i'd caught this call
I just missed a call on the landline. When I hit *69, they told me that the number that had just called was 616-361-2588. Googling that number hit The Dove Foundation, a so-called "charity" that is conducting some sort of an opinion poll. Because they are a charity, they're exempt from the National Do Not Call list.

They have an FAQ about the opinion poll on their website. They answer the first question, "Why are you calling?" thusly:
Currently we are contacting American families to talk about family-friendly entertainment and how people can influence film makers to produce more wholesome movies. Also, we are asking people their thoughts on the MPAA movie rating system, and if they feel helpless to change what is being produced. We plan on sharing the information we collect with studio executives and also have posted some of the results of our national consumer opinion poll on our web site.

I reallllly wish I'd caught that call. I'm so sure that they want the opinions of a foul-mouthed, decisive, opinionated, quasi-pagan like me. It could have been fun...

I wish you'd caught that, too! (Preaching to the choir: How to find family-friendly movies? Read family-oriented movie sites And Decide For Your Own Family. How radical! How to encourage? Don't go to violent movies! Sheesh, these people.)

I bet they just throw out contrasting views -- if they're not using a respected pollster, why keep to statistical validity methods?

One of the NCOs in a unit I was in 5 or 6 years ago recommended a particular ISP to me, because it was family-oriented, and would protect me from porn. It took an act of will to not say to him, "But that's why I have internet access!"

Of course, these days I wouldn't resist the impulse.

I had a call from them the other day myself. I had to be positively rude to get them off the phone...

I'm almost hoping they call back. Could be even more fun than baiting Jehovah's Witnesses.

The witnesses are only easy if they are new. The older educated ones have actually read things and are a bit trickier. My father invites them in and then pulls out books in 3 languages to compare translations.
