I really have that question about my non-cooking friend to thank for discovering this recipe, since it led me to Cooking For Engineers. It's messy to prepare, and needs more salt, not to mention using a sweet onion rather than white or red onions, which is what I had to work with. But they were really crunchy and good. I think they'd be even more tasty if we used barbecue chips instead of regular ones. And I think this would be a great way to make clam cakes: dredge minced clams in flour, dip them in batter, form them into patties, then roll them in the cracker-chip crumbs and pan fry. Or something like that.

I'll definitely try this recipe again.
