i'm here
What a freakin' nightmare.

First, I get to my unit to pick up my travel orders, and I have to do MORE paperwork. Plus I have to take a box of stuff with me for the guys down here -- whatever. I didn't even get over to my parents' house to say goodbye till 11. Then I realized that I'd left a very important bag behind at home, containing my beret, belt, dogtags, and pocket knife, and I had to go all the way back to Lawrence to get it. I didn't actually get on the road till 12:30.

And the trip was just a delight. I missed Rte 91 in Hartford, was on my way to Danbury before I realized my error. I corrected the error, though, and picked up 95 in Bridgeport.

Then, going through NYC, I somehow screwed up and ended up on the Throgs Neck Bridge (what is a throg, please?). DO NOT WANT. Unlike the GW Bridge, though, they charge you in both directions, $4.50, so that was a $9 mistake. The traffic to get over the GW was a nightmare, and then when I finally did get into NJ, getting through the tollbooths to get the tickets was awful. I so need a transponder.

I finally got here at 8:30. A six-hour trip took eight hours, and I swear, even getting off track didn't put me that far behind. I'm wiped... and I still need to unpack, because I'm not sure where my underwear is.

i feel: exhausted exhausted

Heh... I would have loved a beer, but I got here so late and was so tired I didn't dare try to find a convenience store, never mind a packie. (Though I think convenience stores sell beer down here... hm...)

I'm pretty sure convenience stores in Jersey won't sell any alcohol... but there are a lot of liquor stores and they are usually open really long hours. (at least thats how it worked at the point I still lived next door in PA) However, Jersey does have going for it the fact that its state law for them to pump your fuel for you :-)

Now that I'm back on post, it doesn't matter. I can go to the Class Six Store, which is the on-post liquor store, and they carry all my favorites. :-D

We don't sell any alcohol in convenience stores. There are "liquor stores" privately run, which sell beer, wine, and booze. There are also a limited number of package stores which sell beer. And liquor stores are open on Sundays.

Eh, no worries. I can go to the Class Six on post later.

Hey -- I got a 4 day pass for the weekend of your wedding. Now I just have to find something to wear...

PS~ I'm glad you made it home safely and I'm sorry the ride was so horrible-- I've had a few rides home that went like that and so I know how much it sucks when you're already behind and you just want to BE THERE. *hugs*

Doesn't help that I started out tired, too. No worries, though; I'm fine. :-)

I am sorry the drive sucked. I had a few business trip drives like that and they royally suck! But, I am glad you had a safe drive.

We used to make fun of the Throg's Neck name when we were kids, growing up on LI and visiting relatives in NJ. Now, years later, I am grateful that I don't have to go over either bridge every other weekend just to see Ryan, unlike those 6 years before we finally found a place and moved in together here in CT.

There is one silver lining to the Throg's Neck - road construction on the Whitestone toll plaza last weekend was a frinking nightmare, and the Cross Island was backed up the wazoo because 2 lanes were closed on what's already a bottlenecked road, for road construction/repair.

Glad you made it in safely, and hope the rest of the weekend goes easier than this... *hugs*

I'm thoroughly convinced that the GWB is the source of much evil in the world. I *never* take it if it can in some way be avoided. Remind me to tell you how to take the Tappen Zee home and back.
