my take on canterbury - when you don't know what to do... — LiveJournal
do the next thing
my take on canterbury

I got up in plenty of time to get everything together and get out the door on time... except I miscalculated as I was trying to wake up. Didn't help that I didn't get enough sleep. darkwolfie had been out the night before and had not set an alarm, which I didn't realize, so I was in charge of getting EVERYTHING together, including him, which made me more angry than I should have been (it really should have only made me mildly miffed.) It didn't help that this was an incredibly stressful week (seriously, more stressful than when the Humvee rolled over on my range, and oh, I haven't told you that one yet -- yeah, not a good week for me) between work and darkwolfie being sick therefore not able to help me destress. By the time we went to get in the car we were an hour late and I was so full of undirected RAGE I could barely function. Plus it was raining, and I didn't want to go to an event in the rain. After we picked up the meat pies for lunch (piepiepiepiepiepiepie), I went to sleep till we got off the highway and I needed to navigate. It helped dispell some of the RAGE.

I should have realized that if it was raining on us in Lawrence, it was already clearing in Spencer, which is southwest of us. By the time we got to the event, it had cleared up and was about to be a gorgeous day, if a bit chilly under the trees. I was sure to bring wool clothes for both of us, though I had decided not to bring cloaks. I had this lovely square wrap that darkwolfie bought for me at Pennsic that I wear doubled over my shoulders and pinned with a penannular brooch, so if it gets rainy or cool, I can pull the top flap up over my head. (I saw this on an episode of "Meeting the Ancestors" where they reconstructed an Anglo-Saxon woman's costume, and it's very graceful.) I was sort of wanting my grey wool leggings, but I got over it. darkwolfie wore his green wool tunic that I need to take the trim off the sleeves and replace with something more appropriate and I also need to mend the neck slit because it's fraying, and he was mostly comfortable in the trees when he was shooting.

I heralded some of the tourney, including the quarter-finals, which was fun, though I very much disliked the way they had the list field set up. It was very cramped, and the list mistress' tent was in the center, instead of at one side. It was also GIGANTIC. Had they used a pop-up, there would have been more room for walkways. I'm sure there were good reasons for doing what they did, but I don't have to like something that made my job that much harder (big mucking tents tend to block sound). The tourney was great though, and IMO, Master Frodo won Best Death hands-down. It isn't often that you see a samurai that size flop like a fish and then get CPR from a Roman Tribune.

I got to meet kuzu_no_ha for the first time, which was super nifty, and spend some time with some new folks from BBM who I think will be great additions to our Society, and with hugh_mannity, who is a super person that I don't get to see enough.

Then court, which I did not wish to work, given that the RAGE was so recently abated. The new chairs on which I spent a fortune so I could have them for Pennsic and then didn't had their maiden voyage, and I pronounce them Very Comfy and Easier To Get Out Of Than Those Damn Sling Chairs (think that'll fit on the award?). I did some spinning, and realized that I was underspinning the blue colonial that I bought at Pennsic, and sadly DROPPED my lovely Spanish Peacock spindle on the concrete floor and dinged up the tip. I may email Miguel and see if he has any suggestions on how to fix it.

Court was a bit lengthy, but well-done. Everyone who participated had a good strong voice, and there were very few bobbles. I was very pleased to see how improved some folks were, in fact (and mrgrumpybear will know who I mean). And then the awards... I think that sibilla_dangers and chrystie69 were suitably surprised by their Silver Crescents -- I was surprised that chrystie69 didn't have one yet! And then there was kiena_s, who practically had to be picked up and carried into court. I got pictures of her getting her court baroncy, though she made it hard with the weeping and the (small amounts of) flailing that almost set me off -- I'll have to post them tonight. It was awesome, though, and very well-deserved. And my beloved Mistress and her darling husband got a small part of what is coming to them by way of a fabulous scroll from TRM by nazrynn and Co. I wonder if we can find a framer that'll give the household a group rate, since we have so many to get done? (I still have my Maunche and the King's Cyphers that darkwolfie and I got at B&A's Last Court that need attention.)

Then we went home, and my beloved husband, who is far more forgiving than I deserve, went and got us Chinese food. I only had a couple of eggrolls and some fried rice, but it was plenty.

Sunday was very lazy, mostly because I woke up with a pounding headache. I didn't help that there was a kid outside with a recorder and s/he was overblowing it to make noise (ask me how I recognize that sound). As much as I might fantasize about snatching it out of the kid's hand and stomping it to bits on the pavement, I can't do that... so I fantasized. The ibuprofen eventually worked though. I think it might have been the MSG from the Chinese food, because everything else I ate the day before, I eat on a regular basis, and I'd had almost no sugar.

darkwolfie made a pot roast in the slow cooker that, I kid you not, brought me to tears. It wasn't just that it was good (because ZOMG SO GOOD) it was that even though I was a RAGING BITCH the day before, he forgave me and made me yummy and delicious food. Sometimes I just don't deserve him...

Then again, sometimes he doesn't deserve me, so I guess that in the end it'll all even out.

I got my training schedule for the next year today, and I don't have to work on October 7th after all, so I'll be teaching at Novice Schola again (spinning and hand sewing) and then at the end of the month, on the 20th, at Mimir's Well in VT (spinning, hand sewing, and apron dresses). Guess I'd best get onto writing the handout for the hand sewing class...

I just realized I had the post about the finished scroll friends-locked.
I unlocked it - here it is:

Regrettably, I don't have a better photo than this to show off Her Excellency Aelfgifa's beautiful calligraphy. (Would it be possible to obtain one though? I am sure she would love a better shot for her folio too, I was burning through dead batteries before running out the door to the event).

I'll try to remember to ask Her Grace if I can take some next time I'm there; I'm sure she'll say yes. I'll try and get everything, in sections.
