darkwolfie and I went for a ride this afternoon. I led, which was nice, because I got to show him that I've gained a lot of confidence in my riding, plus I knew where we were going.

We went out to Bay 4 Motorsports, where he has an appointment a week from Tuesday to get the carbs fixed on his bike. They had a bike there that we wanted to look at though, and it was way too nice a day to stay indoors.

It was a much better ride than the day I went out there to get my bike inspected. For one thing, I didn't get lost, which is always good. And it was 20 degrees warmer, which was fabulous. Traffic wasn't too bad once we got out of downtown Lawrence (because people drive like ASSHOLES here, seriously -- both darkwolfie and I yelled at people to get off our backs), and it was just fun to ride with him again.

So we got there around 1, and chatted with the owner, and looked at the bike. It's a 2001 Suzuki Savage 650 with something like 5500 miles on it. It's in gorgeous shape -- we only found one scratch, on the edge of the front fender (easily fixed), and it comes with saddlebags and a windshield.

Given that darkwolfie's Kawasaki has given honorable service, but is getting a mite elderly, we decided that we were going to buy the 650 for him. We're both paying on it, but it's his birthday present. We're keeping the Kawi -- after 21 years, it's a member of the family.

Thing is, now I'm having engine envy. So I'm going to keep my eyes open for a similar good deal. I'm willing to trade in my GZ250 so someone else can have a fun beginner ride. It would be nice to get a bigger bike before we go to Nova Scotia in September.

As we were pulling back in the driveway, the windshield fell off my bike. I'm not sure what came loose, but the threads on one of the fittings that holds it onto the bike is mucked up, and either needs to be retapped or replaced before I can fix it. I went back out in the afternoon, just a quick run up to the grocery store, and I really noticed a difference -- the windshield really deflected a lot of wind off my chest. I'm just glad that the thing didn't fall off at speed, on the road somewhere. They ain't cheap... and yet, I don't know if I can buy just the bracket. I need to figure out where this windshield came from first. (I don't know for sure, because it came with the bike.) It sure doesn't look like the official one from Suzuki. I may end up retapping it, if I can't find the part.

It's been a good day. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

cool about Wolfie's new bike

And I just realized after seeing the pics above of Wolfie, how much he looks like my Snorri. Funny!
