This morning, after I woke up, I took off my CPAP mask and just lounged for a bit, snoozed a little. I set my alarm for 15 minutes because I didn't want to really go to sleep. While I was dozing, my leg jerked up like I was trying to knee someone in the groin. "Huh," I sez to myself, "That's never happened before." It was very different from the all-over falling sensation you can sometimes get when you're trying to fall asleep.

So I get up and go downstairs, greet my beloved, and tell him about what happened with my leg. "I've never done that before!" sez I. "Yes, you have!" quoth he. "You do it all the time! You've never actually kicked me, but your legs jerk and kick all the time! Hasn't happened since you got your CPAP, though."

We've been together for seven years. We've lived together for six and a half. He's never, ever mentioned this. Because he's never said anything, I've never said anything to the sleep therapists! Too funny.

According to what I've found online, it may be Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD), which is leg twitches that may or may not wake me, but it can cause a similar disruption of my sleep to the sleep apnea.

I'm not really worried about it, since I've never kicked darkwolfie and it seems to stop when I use the CPAP. But I will mention it to the therapist next month when I go in for my follow up.

I'm mostly amazed that I've been sleeping with the man for SEVEN YEARS and he's never said a peep about me doing this.

I was afraid if I told you, you'd figure out a way to aim!

Is it sad I learned the term Myoclonic Jerk from House?
tashabear From: tashabear Date: May 22nd, 2008 02:53 am (UTC) (base camp)
No... except that's a seizure, isn't it, and this isn't a seizure. (I learned it from being an EMT.)

Also... You're alive! Are you still doing SCA stuff?
bkdelong From: bkdelong Date: May 22nd, 2008 03:09 am (UTC) (base camp)
Heh. I thought that was what they called said "Jerk" that happens just prior to going to sleep. Its how I tell my little boy falls asleep when I'm keeping him company to allay his fears of the dark.

As far as.SCA, notsomuch locally. My Mom is apparently pretty popular In Bergenthal after I introduced her and she's had more time. R do some events there as we can take the boy to her house for nap. Otherwise date conflicts and some social nervousness has altered my course to some LARPing and other activities with Brandeisians(?)

Yowch. Posting from new blackberry.

Heh. No worries. I speak Garble.

Wish I had more events planned this summer, but thus far, Panteria is looking to be it. If you see me mention something local that my household is going to, you'd be welcome to hang for the day. Don't let the shiny hats fool you, Brion and Anna are the original "made of awesome" people.

I am honored for the invite. Many thanks.

Ah, okay. Apparently "hypnic jerk" is the falling sensation I mentioned. Now that I think about it, "tonic/clonic" is what they call a grand mal seizure.

Yeah, had I not been on the train home I actually would have hit the dictionary prior to posting that. :)

>Jerk" that happens just prior to going to sleep
I do this big jerk as I fall asleep when I'm very overtired. I've been known to accidentally kick Tom very hard.

Drug me baby! Think I can get some Ativan out of it?

(Actually, I don't think it is RLS; I don't have any of the other symptoms, just the twitching.)
albreda From: albreda Date: May 22nd, 2008 03:15 am (UTC) (base camp)
Ativan. ::shudder:: That stuff MADE me twitch, and get all nervous and neurotic. No fun.
tashabear From: tashabear Date: May 22nd, 2008 03:29 am (UTC) (base camp)
Heh. They gave me a scrip for that for pain after my back surgery. I filled it, but never actually took any. Ibuprofen is my drug of choice.

Interesting. Whenever we had to share a bed on family vacations my sister would tell mom and dad I was kicking her all night and they would tell me to cut it out, but I would swear that I had no idea what they were talking about. I guess this explains that!

My sister kicked me! And all this time I thought she was just mean...
s2go From: s2go Date: May 22nd, 2008 08:22 pm (UTC) (base camp)
something else about the leg jerks and why they don't happen w/ your machine on...

your body will jerk like that because it thinks you've stopped breathing and it's an automatic response to make sure you're alive.

might explain why you don't do it w/ the machine on :D

on a totally seperate note (in reference to the comments about household and SCA), I miss playing SCA ~pout~. Snorri & I haven't been to more than 3 events between us since we moved up here to the Middle Kingdom. ~sigh~
