The principal commission I might be interested in is a portfolio that doesn't look like I bought it at Staples or Charrette, and is bigger than 8.5x11 (for containing and supporting a scroll and its transcription, for court heraldry).

Another possibility is to engage you to do the underpinnings to support a woven-beaded coronet.

If you decide to pursue this line of business, let's talk.

I am planning on it. This particular poll is info-gathering for the manager at Tandy -- he wants to do a set-up at Birka. The leather/tools/hardware side will be all Tandy sales; the finished goods and repairs would be him, me, and whomever else we get to help out.

That being said, we can definitely talk about your needs, since you probably don't want to wait till Birka. :-) I'm currently planning on being at Coronation, if that helps.

My daughter would like a back quiver, and I don't want to spend $200 on one. Christmas and her birthday (February) are coming up.......

Ooh, now there's a challenge! We can talk about that, too!

i'm in the same boat; want a back quiver too, but they all be mighty costly to buy.

There's actually been several folks calling for quivers in the sca_east poll, too. Going to have to talk to Ken about that one.

I'm considering commissioning a folder of sorts. I just don't like the layouts of all the notepad holders/folios you can buy commercially. Plus, being able to get the item decorated to suit me... bonus.

Trick is, I don't really have a sense of how much such an item would cost, so it might actually be out of my price range.

It'll really depend on what you want it to be -- how much tooling, laced or stitched, painted or just dyed. Obviously, the more complex, the more expensive. I'm sure we can work something out that you'd like and can afford. Baseline will start at around $50, though.

Sounds like it might be in my range then. You'll be at Coronation, right? Can we talk then?

I will! Looking forward to it!

I'm already playing with water-hardened leather, with an eye towards making coronets and hardened-leather toys. I do need tools & training, though. I primarily paint, instead of tool/carve.

My answer to your polls is "all of the above", (except decorative bracers, of which there are already tons of people producing) but I might in particular trip up to Tandy soon to shop. I'd also be willing to help work on producing items FOR the Birka shop over the winter, in exchange for learning how to carve/tool. I can cut a strap, and i'm OK at setting rivets, so I could work on belts/garters, etc. I've also got a pretty good belt pouch pattern I've used before, large enough to hold wallet, cell, and checkbook, without being Obscenely Huge.

I'll let Ken know -- I'm nowhere near good enough to teach.

Let me know when you're coming up to Tandy; maybe we can do lunch.

I'd be interested in commissioning a sheath for a carving knife.
tashabear From: tashabear Date: September 17th, 2008 02:55 pm (UTC) (base camp)
We can definitely talk about that. I've never done a knife sheath before, but I do want to add sheaths to my repertoire.

I'll be at Coronation.

Hee! I'm starting to feel like I should set up a table! ;-)
