that was weird...
I just got a phone call from the 514 area code, some "survey". The guy had (to me) a very clear Quebec accent. When I asked him whey he was calling me from Quebec to do a survey, he told me he was calling from California. I know my landline phone sucketh mightily, but I do know that accent when I hear it. He was very nice when i told him I didn't have time for his survey, and to take me off the call list, but is there some law that states that telemarketers cannot call across international borders? I hope so, because I'd love to report this to someone.

Why is it that hard to believe that someone with a Quebec accent was calling from California, though? People move around all the time... seems odd to assume someone is somewhere just because of what accent they have. :)

Accent + Montreal area code = not in California.

Haha, somehow totally missed the 514 thing - my bad. Yes, that makes very little sense.

Maybe he was trying to pretend he was in 415, my old stomping grounds.

I can totally understand that, what with winter coming on and all. No excuse for lying, though.

Because the phone number on the caller ID was 514, a Quebec area code.

Yeah, I'm sorry! I missed that. :)

All telemarketing should be banned.

No such law. In fact, it should be easier to do telemarketing calls from Canada into the U.S. since the Do Not Call registry does not have anything about out-of-U.S. calls, even if it was a U.S. corporation paying for it.

Watch "Outsourced" on NBC Thursday nights. They got the part right about training the call centers to sound like they live in the U.S.

Except for the people who clearly sound Quebecois.
