I think my lactose sensitivity has reared its ugly head once again. I haven't had issues all summer, and here it is again. And I keep forgetting to take my Lactaid before I eat cheese. I had mac and cheese for dinner and now I feel gross -- slightly nauseated and headachy. Plus, I'm still exhausted from my errands in Worcester on Tuesday. I had to go pay an old parking ticket before I could register my car, and Tuesday was the last day of the month. On the way down I stopped and visited with my folks, and on the way home I stopped at the Woolpack to see what they had in.

They have the Araucania Natural Wool in Bulky, and I love the texture, but I was looking for more yardage in the skein, so I guess I'll either shop at Fiber Loft on Saturday or the Hub Mill Store in Lowell sometime next week. The bulky has a wonderful soft, spongy texture, though. I really liked it.

Saturday is my birthday. My mother-in-law gave me a fat gift card to Michael's... shame I won't knit any of their yarns. Then again... I might be interested in Cotton-Ease or Microspun. It's just that $50 would be enough for yarn for a sweater from Beaverslide Dry Goods or even good old Cascade 220. I'm such an ungrateful wretch. I do like Microspun, and I've been wanting to knit something with it, and I could always make a Sitcom Chic out of CottonEase. So it's not a waste... just unexpected -- I didn't expect anything! :-)

I'm going to give each of my cousins and my aunt and uncle slips of paper on Saturday, and have them tell me what they want me to knit them: hat, socks, mittens, or scarf, and what color. I get to pick the yarn and pattern. I should have added felted purse, and I might yet, come to think of it. I could do slippers, too. Phooey. I'm too creative for my own good. I can even make Fuzzy Feet non-skid, by dotting the bottoms with puffy fabric paint. This could be fun! I think I will add the bag and slippers. Mom thinks that it's a good idea. That way I at least have a direction, and since I have so many cool ideas and patterns for each item, it'll be a piece of cake. Ish. No plan ever survives first contact with the enemy, after all.

However, it's a good opportunity to try some yarns I've been curious about, like the ones from Beaverslide, and Araucania, and maybe even Koigu. I'm all for playing with string.

i feel: blah blah

I've been severely lactose incompetent for a long time, so I will now share with you my wisdom. :-)

Carry Lactaid with you always. If you forget to take it and then remember during the meal, take it. It will still work.

If you completely forget to take it, and remember when the nausea starts, take Pepto. It's classic and it works.

If the pain is really horrid!gas!pain! take something with simethecone. There is/was a great product called Di-Gel out there that is hard to find now. It's an antacid and anti-gas and it's the best damned thing I've ever taken for the horrible pain, but, like I said, hard to find. Something with simethecone should do the trick.

Other than that, if it gets really horrible (when I have to take more than 2 pills to get through a dinner), take a dairy break and let your body recover.

Now, all that said, have you ever bought yarns from http://www.handpaintheaven.com/ ? I'm considering one of their kits (here: http://www.handpaintheaven.com/peacjac.html ) and I'm always nervous about ordering from an independent place over the web.

You can buy generic anti-gas pills at CVS (and presumably other places) that are all about simethicone. I think the non-generic version is a form of Maalox.

And, I've bought a thing or two from Cherry Tree Hill/Handpaint Heaven, around the time they divided the operation. They're okay. I think some of the yarns have weird yardage but if you are buying a kit it will be fine.

It's not gas... it somewhat more squishy than that. And I'll just leave it there.

It's just that it comes and goes. Sometimes I'm terribly uncomfortable, sometimes I have no issues at all. It's annoying, not knowing how my body will react to something I've been eating all my life. I guess I just have to default to the Lactaid.

I have some CTH yarn; love it. Only used it for socks thus far, though.
